For its [VITRINE] project, HOTEL CONTEMPORARY is pleased to present The Bachelors by British artist Charlie Billingham.

The imagery in Billingham’s paintings stems from Georgian and Regency era satirical drawings and prints, such as those of James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson, who, like Billingham himself, were alumni of the Royal Academy Schools. The artist takes cropped sections of the original images, thus shifting and recontextualising the initial narratives, and reworks them with layers of colour to create his oil paintings. In these two works, Billingham sourced the imagery from a drawing by Thomas Rowlandson, which depicts two men brawling in the sreet.

The location chosen for this [VITRINE] draws on the historical context of Billingham’s source material. In the 18th century, the Georgian bourgeoisie would convene at Shepherd Market to indulge in lustful and excessively inebriated evenings, often leading to encounters such as those depicted in The Bachelors.
